What are custom-made foot orthotics?
Custom-made foot orthotics are devices made from a 3 dimensional cast of the foot to fit into footwear. The goal of custom-made foot orthotics is to alleviate stress and pain of the feet and lower limbs. At Wallis for Wellness, our pedorthist is a senior associate with SoleScience, a leader in the orthotic and pedorthic field in Canada.
What is a Certified Pedorthist?
A certified pedorthist is a health care professional who is trained and certified in the assessment, design, manufacture, fit and modification of foot orthotics and the fitting and modification of footwear. Our pedorthist works in conjunction with our multidisciplinary team at Wallis for Wellness to provide you with an integrated plan of care.
What is involved?
A patient will require to bring in a physician’s referral with a medical diagnosis, 2-3 pairs of footwear most frequently worn and a pair of shorts. The initial assessment is 45 minutes. The assessment includes patient history, in-depth biomechanical assessment (weight bearing, non-weight bearing and range of motion tests), gait analysis, footwear evaluation, education and recommendations and a 3 dimensional casting of the feet if orthotics are recommended. The fitting of the orthotics and follow up appointments are 30 minutes.
What are some common conditions treated by custom-made foot orthotics?
Some common conditions are metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of foot), Morton’s neuroma (numbness/tingling in toes),bunions, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, knee pain, hip pain, low back pain, leg length discrepancy, arthritis in toes/ankle.
