Jacks Fight For A Cure To Diamond Blackfan Anemia By Janet
Diamond Blackfan Anemia is a pure red cell aplasia. People who suffer from it are unable to produce red blood cells and require steroids or red blood cell transfusions to stay alive. My son has a blood transfusion every three weeks and to date has had 38. He is two and a half. He also needs to chelate every night with a pump to rid his body of the iron overload that has accumulated as a result of the transfusions. Here is a great video my friend made sort of visually explaining what he goes through. (Warning, it's a tear-jerker)
Myself and another mother whom I met at a bone marrow failure conference have been working together with our board to start a foundation here in Canada for what Jack has and I'm very happy to announce that last month DBA Canada received charitable status through the Canada Revenue Agency. As a result an anonymous donor has offered us a $5000 match donation. All donations we receive between now and June 18th 2011 they will match dollar for dollar up to $5000.
In addition on November 11 2011 our family will be hosting a dinner/dance/silent auction in Orangeville to raise money for Diamond Blackfan Anemia research. We hosted this same event in 2009 and raised $25,000 this year we hope to raise $50,000. Tickets are $75 each and will include dinner, open bar, and live band.
